Bay Area shoppers now have a new Asian grocery option in the Anza Vista City Center complex, where T&T Supermarket opened its first San Francisco store on Wednesday, November 5. The 50,000-square-foot space once housed a Best Buy that closed nearly a decade ago.
Why it matters
For residents who have driven to San Jose or Canada for a familiar Asian grocery run, a full-size T&T on this side of the Bay changes the weekly shop. The store's opening also reflects how the company got the space: its CEO's cold call to Mayor Daniel Lurie, who promised the permit would not take three and a half years.
The new store fills 50,000 square feet, a footprint that compares with the chain's roughly 40 locations, most of them in Canada and Washington state. T&T's first California store opened in June in San Jose, and the company has not said how many Bay Area stores it plans beyond the ones already announced.
The players
T&T Supermarket
A Vancouver-founded Asian grocery chain that operates nearly 40 locations, now expanding across the Bay Area.
Tina Lee
CEO of T&T Supermarket, whose family founded the chain in 1993.
Daniel Lurie
San Francisco's mayor, who assured T&T's leadership the permit for the space would not take three and a half years.
Anza Vista
The developer that runs the City Center shopping complex where the new store sits.
The details
T&T Supermarket opened its first San Francisco location in the City Center shopping complex run by Anza Vista, in a space that most recently housed a Best Buy. The store includes a T&T Cafe, the chain's first in the U.S., and sells baby bear bao and tree-ripened mangos from Peru that the San Jose store does not carry. The company says a Millbrae location on South El Camino Real will open by summer 2027, followed shortly after by a fourth Bay Area store in Newark's NewPark Mall.
Timeline
June: T&T's first California store opened in San Jose.
Nearly a decade ago: the Best Buy at the San Francisco space closed.
Wednesday, November 5, 2026: the San Francisco store opened.
Summer 2027: a Millbrae location on South El Camino Real is expected to open.
Shortly after Millbrae: a fourth Bay Area store is set to debut at Newark's NewPark Mall.
Across the Bay
T&T's first California store opened in San Jose in June, and this San Francisco location follows that same expansion path into the Bay Area's core. It makes the chain's second California store, with the Millbrae and Newark locations to come.
If you shop in the Anza Vista City Center area, you now have a full-size Asian grocery with a cafe and a wider produce selection than the San Jose store. Plan for the Millbrae and Newark openings if you live on the Peninsula or in the East Bay.
The takeaway
A permit that could have taken three and a half years instead came through with help from the mayor's office, a useful reminder of how much faster a retail opening can move when city hall engages. Watch for the Millbrae opening next summer if you want a closer T&T on the Peninsula.
What happens next
The Millbrae location on South El Camino Real is slated to open by summer 2027, and a Newark NewPark Mall store will follow shortly after.
